Domestic Violence Counseling

Get the help you need today

There are few things as painful as domestic violence. Putting your trust in someone only to be physically or emotionally abused by them is traumatic. When this kind of thing happens, domestic violence counseling can help. Domestic abuse isn’t just physical. If you or a loved one have been subjected to sexual, financial, or emotional abuse, domestic violence counseling is just as important.

At Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County, we know how sensitive this issue is. Survivors of domestic violence can often blame themselves, become isolated, or lose trust in everyone around them. It might seem daunting to seek out help from people you don’t know, especially after what you’ve been through. We are a compassionate staff that sees your struggle. We believe in the healing power of therapy, and we’re here to help both the survivor and offender of domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Batterer’s Intervention Treatment (EMERGE Model)

Goals of the program include: a better understanding of violence, abusive and controlling behaviors, personal ownership of past behaviors and choices, and development of nonviolent communication and relationship skills. This program is approved by the Solicitors office.

What Are Some Different Types of Domestic Violence Counseling?

Things might feel overwhelming right now, but there is an entire network of support for survivors and offenders of interpersonal violence. Let’s discuss some of the types of domestic violence counseling and how they can help.

  • Individual therapy. Abuse of any kind is like a hurricane – it destroys everything in its path. This includes trust and confidence. For some people, individual therapy is the perfect first step. With individual therapy, your unique needs are taken into consideration. You’ll meet with your counselor on a regularly scheduled basis. Together, you’ll work to break down your trauma and begin the healing process. BHS Pickens has only master-level clinicians and licensed professional counselors – all of whom are filled with compassion, understanding, and patience.
  • Group Therapy. Confiding in a group of people who share your experience can be a powerful tool for healing. With a support group, you’ll be able to connect with others who are also living with the same circumstances. Our Women’s Empowerment Group (Survivor Group Only) at BHS Pickens is designed to restore the confidence you have in yourself and in others. You’ll be working through your traumas with a group of women on your side who care about you.
  • Life skills. Life skills are meant to restore your independence through the learning or re-learning of how to take care of yourself. If you’ve been in a relationship with an abuser, you may have struggled with things like codependency or interdependency. One of the things you’ll learn in life skills is how to regain your freedom; emotionally, financially, and more.

FAQs About Domestic Violence Counseling and Treatment

How often do I need to come?

How often you attend counseling depends on the type of treatment you choose and your individual needs. Individual therapy is usually once a week for 50 minutes. Our women’s empowerment support group is weekly as well. EMERGE, our program for those who have committed domestic violence, is a 26-week course. You’ll learn more about your time commitments after your initial assessment. We will take your schedule and your needs into account.

How can I be admitted into services?

Admission into services begins with a comprehensive assessment. You can also schedule your assessment by calling our main office number at 864-898-5800. The assessment will last about 2 ½ hours. Please bring a picture ID, proof of income, and an insurance card (if applicable). Once your assessment is completed, you and the clinician will discuss what services will best meet your needs.

Can I afford domestic violence counseling?

We work with all of our patients on a sliding fee scale. We also accept most major insurances, including Medicaid, and we offer payment plans.  Please note: Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County will not deny requested health care services and shall not discriminate in the provision of services to an individual because the individual is unable to pay for the services.

Is there help for abusers?

We offer a course called EMERGE for those who have had problems initiating domestic violence. This is a 26-week course that is usually mandated by the court. We work with people who have committed abuse by helping them with healthy coping techniques, anger management, and anxiety/depression management.

At Behavioral Health Pickens, we feel fortunate to have the knowledge and experience that can help you through this. You’re not alone, we’re here for you. If you have any questions, please call us at 864-898-5800. We hope to see you soon.
