Prevention Services
BHS seeks to reach three goals through its prevention services: to increase the number of people who abstain from the use of alcohol and other drugs, to delay, and to decrease the number of people who are high risk users of other drugs.
These goals are achieved by providing the following services:
- Safe and Drug free School grant
- Community Prevention programs (Health Fairs,
presentations)
- Employee Assistance Programs
- Outdoor Adventure Education (low ropes
course, mobile group initiatives)
- Leadership Prevention Program (Youth Board/
high school students ages 14-18) applications are accepted every May- June
- Alternative Events (after-prom assistance,
training program for youth board, high and low ropes, DUI goggles
- Resource Room (including videos, flyers, books, curriculum and other educational materials available to the community.)

1. TAC (Tobacco, Alcohol Community) coalition consists of law enforcement, media, parents, youth and BHSPC employees
2. CLFC (Creating Lasting Family Connection) coalition consists of school and community agencies, parents, youth and law enforcement

Prevention Educational Classes
- PREP (Palmetto Retailers Education Program): http://www.daodas.state.sc.us/prep_main.asp A merchant education class used in an effort to better inform alcohol and tobacco retailers about the laws regarding underage sales and the potential consequences of selling alcohol and tobacco to minors. (held at BHSPC and local advertised community facility)
- Building Resilient Families: Evidence-based program “Parenting Adolescents Wisely” Children and Parent programs (held at BHSPC AND local alternative school)
- Adult Anger Management: This curriculum was published by SAMHSA(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,and is used in part with other materials.This educational class is designed to help participants in a group setting to learn anger management skills.
- Anger Management for Adolescents: Evidence-based program “Second Step” (held at BHSPC and local alternative school)
- At Youth: Adolescent substance Use/Abuse Program “Project Alert” (held at BHSPC and local alternative school)
- Creating Lasting Family Connection: parents and children programs implemented at the John T. Simpson Alternative School
- Faith-Based Adolescent Anger Management: Evidence-based
program “Second Step” along with scripture content (can be held at a
faith-based facility)
